Greetings from Fr. Nevsky Everett
I can hardly express my excitement at our imminent move to Bucharest. Since my appointment, I have visited three times, and each time I have come away longing to be back!
I am currently the Chaplain of Keble College, Oxford, where I have been since 2016. It has been a wonderfully diverse ministry, and one that I have enjoyed immensely. My own spirituality has been profoundly shaped by the catholic revival that took place in the Church of England in the nineteenth century, of which John Keble was such an important part, and so it has been a great joy to serve in a place where that living tradition is preserved.
I grew up in Hertfordshire, and was an undergraduate in Cambridge. My undergraduate degree was Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic – which fuelled my love of history and languages. I then trained for ordination at Westcott House in Cambridge, and served my curacy in Letchworth Garden City, Hertfordshire before moving to Oxford. I recently completed a doctorate on Isaac the Syrian, who is widely venerated in the Orthodox world because of the depth of his writing on prayer. I have a keen interest in Orthodoxy more widely, and am excited to build further relationships and connections between Anglicans and the Romanian Orthodox.
I am married to Clare, who has wide-ranging experience as a teacher of both children and undergraduates, and who is working on her own doctorate on Clement of Alexandria. We have two children – Agnes, who is 6 and Alban who is 3 – and we are expecting a baby in July. Our whole family is looking forward to the move to Romania, and we have all started learning Romanian together. Alban gives the impression that he will manage to get by on lapte and noroc!
Please pray for us as we prepare to make the move. We are so grateful for the kindness and generosity that so many of you have already shown. It is a real testament to our community’s sense of hope and trust as we set out to discern God’s will for the Chaplaincy at the beginning of this new stage in its life and witness.
